Chiefs get first win of the season
The Kansas City Chiefs got their first win of the season today, beating the Eagles 31 - 10. While Brodie Croyle had 3 TD passes, including a 46 yard pass to Hines Ward, the real story of the day seems to be 2 rookies.

On the offense, coach Norm Chow made the decision this week to start Kevin Gogan in place of the aging John Welborne. Gogan came up big, picking up 9 pancakes and not allowing a sack all game. An unnamed source was reported as saying "This is just the kind of play we need from the RG. Obviously Locklear is the weak link on that line, so if we can get some good play out of the guys next to him, that goes a long way."

The other rookie who was impressive this week was the Chiefs' other first round pick, Dan Saleaumua. Saleaumua recorded 3 tackles, all of which were sacks. He also stripped the ball from Matt Flynn on his only rush of the game.

That brings Saleaumua's sack total up to 4 on the season. Meanwhile, free agency acquisition, Sam Adams has only recorded one tackle on the season. However, there is a positive, in this game alone, the LBs recorded 10 tackles, including one sack and 2 other tackles for loss. So it appears as if the defensive strategy of putting a fat guy on the line to tie up the blockers is working.

Next up for the Chiefs are the Bengals who just got their first win of the season beating the Raiders at home.

Chiefs suffer disappointing loss in season opener
San Diego, CA -- The Kansas City Chiefs opened their season with a 21-14 loss to divisional rivals, and 2 time Sim Bowl champ, San Diego Chargers.

Coming in to the game, the Chiefs knew they faced a difficult challenge. The Chargers had Michael Turner and Philip Rivers, as well as a respectable defense. The Chiefs, however, had Deangelo Williams instead of LJ, as well as a new defensive team. In addition to the players, the entire coaching staff was new.

In fact, that is perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the game. GM Taylor went out and picked up Norm Chow and Terry Shea as HC and OC respectively. He did this knowing their ability to work with QBs, and hoped their expertise would help Brodie Croyle. Instead, Croyle looked to be the weak link this week.

Is paltry 39.8 rating doesn't do justice to his lackluster performance. He was able to pad his stats and bring his rating up in the 4th quarter when the Chargers were sitting on a 21-0 lead. His two early interceptions set the Chiefs back, and gave the Chargers the short field.

The bright side is that the defense kept both Turner and Rivers out of the end-zone all day, including 4 trips into the red zone. When asked about the Chargers kicking 7 field goals, coach Chow said "You know, it's not going to be every week that you keep a team out of the end zone. You really have to take advantage of that. On the flip side, though, there aren't a lot of guys like Kaeding. A lot of guys wear out after 4 or 5 kicks, and that's what we've got to hope for in the future."

Chiefs Season Primer
The Chiefs are coming off of a difficult season. They did not perform particularly well. When asked at his end-of-season conference why, Herm Edwards was quick to shift the blame to the players. He talked about how Croyle was out for 8 games, LJ wouldn't run, the line wouldn't block, etc.

As a result of that conference, a lot of changes have happened this offseason. To start with, everyone but the GM was canned last year. The Chiefs brought in Norm Chow to be their new HC. They were surprised to have the opportunity to get Chow, but apparently the Titans had a paperwork error that kept Chow from being resigned. When asked about the signing, GM Taylor said "It's a great day for the Chiefs. We have finally taken a step where we don't just retread someone else's fired head coach. We signed Norm for the long run."

One of Chow's first orders of business was getting ready for the draft. To do this, he leveraged some of the fan favorite players for trades. The first trade was sending Derrick Johnson away, and acquiring draft picks. Those picks allowed the Chiefs to draft Kevin Gogan and Dan Saleamua in the first round.

Many people said that Gogan was a wasted pick, however, Chow defended his pick saying "Welborne isn't going to be here forever. We need a good, young line and Gogan helps us with that. Also, it's funny that for such a bad pick we've had so many different teams call us up and offer trades."

One other trade that made waves in Chiefsdom was the trade of annual probowler LJ. The Chiefs sent LJ to the pats for a 1st round pick, Deangelo Williams and a young OLB. This puts the Chiefs in position to make trades this year with an extra first round pick sitting in their pocket.

One player that received lots of inquiries was Brodie Croyle. No less than 3 separate trade offers came in for the young gun slinger. Rumor is that the Chiefs were tempted to trade Croyle, but after this offseason, they're glad they didn't. They spent a lot of time working on conditioning and accuracy. That, combined with improvements on the OL should help Croyle stay healthy.

With a new roster and a new coaching staff, the Chiefs took on the pre-season. The went 4-0 and Chow was quick to say "I'd just have assumed go 2-2. It doesn't mean anything. We don't play the game the same in pre-season as we do in the regular season. Plus if you go 2-2 your players don't get big heads."

First up for this new team is the 2 time defending Simbowl champ San Diego Chargers.

LJ Busts out
It took almost half of the season, with the Chiefs holding on to the fact that they haven't YET been eliminated from playoff contention for LJ to take off the diapers and show up.

In their game this week against the Bucs, LJ broke off almost 200 yards of rushing and 3 TDs. This was the kind of production the Chiefs had for LJ all season. GM Taylor was quoted as saying "This is what I wanted from the second Brodie went down. Even with our new backup we wanted to take the pressure off and let LJ be LJ. I'm hoping that this game is his breakout game for the season."

It might not be too late for the Chiefs. Sure, they're several games behind the defending champ Chargers, but they still have 4 games left against divisional opponents, including 2 against the Chargers.
