Chargers draft summary

1.4 HB Chris Wells (Ohio State)
"Beanie" was at the top of our draft board ahead of B.J. Raji whom would have been a reach this high, especially considering we already had Jenkins on our radar. Arguably, the best combination of size, strength, and quickness at running back, he is the most physically gifted running back in this class. Will make a top notch backup for Michael Turner until he's ready to take over in a year or two.

2.31 RT Alex Boone (Ohio State)

Alex was the leader of an offensive line that averaged 192.5 yards rushing per game in 2008. Extremely fast and agile for a lineman of his stature (6'8", 325lbs). A handful of tackles in the league can match his mix speed and agility but none of them have his strength.

3.4 WR Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma)

One of the top receivers in a very deep WR class. A possession receiver who's a smart route runnner with 95 SPD, 96 AGI, 97 ACC and 83 CTH and a 6'1" frame... this kid would be a starter on most teams but, unfortunately for him, has AJ, Jackson & Naanee ahead of him on the depth chart.

3.31 C Max Unger (Oregon)
The best center in the draft, period. Very athletic and smart. Can also play tackle very effectively. A steal this late in the 3rd round.

4.6 FS Louis Delmas (Western Michigan)

Not our prototype Charger safety but at this point, we were looking for a fast safety with good football skills and we got just that with Delmas. Not the tallest out there but he excels in coverage. A better football player than an athlete, he will make a more than adequate backup.

4.31 DT Terrance Taylor (Michigan)

Drafted has a DT, he will a make huge 3-4 DE at 317lbs and 92 STR.
Will be backing up Luis Castillo on the left side.

Chargers hand veteran nosetackle his walking papers

The Chargers front office announced in a brief press release today that veteran nose tackle Jamal Williams was released for salary cap reason.

Always a major contributor to the team's past success, the veteran captain had been the main reason why San Diego ranked in the top 5 in run defense for 3 straight seasons.

However, the perennial run stopper's star tarnished of late. According to league observers, he was showing signs of his age during training camp. He slowed down considerably, to the point where he was struggling to close the gaps at the point of attack and was no longer a disrupting force at the line of scrimmage.

Rumours around the training facility is that an able replacement was already signed in former Panthers & Colts star Kris Jenkins. GM Jean Roy was contacted but he refused to comment.

Bolts scalp the Skins

The Redskins were hoping to circle the wagons today and ride away with the win in Deceiver Stadium but the Chargers had something else in mind.
Indeed, the Bolts shutout Washington in convincing fashion by the score of 33-0. Much like Jay Cutler the week before, QB Jason Campbell was hurried, knocked down, sacked and intercepted aplenty. The offense was limited to a meager 162 yards, the young QB being held to only 70 yards passing. They sure missed Ocho Cincho.

The Chargers defense was once again impeccable and showed why it's in the top 3 in takeaways, sacks, red zone defense, opposition passing and defensive scoring. Antonio Cromartie was named player of the game with 2 picks, one of which was good for a TD. Veteran Al Wilson and Quentin Jammer also had interceptions. In the case of Quentin, it was his 7th. Luis Castillo had 3 more sacks making 7 in the last 2 games. Brandon Siler and Jamal Williams had one each.

Cromartie now has 5 interceptions on the year

On offense, Michael Turner trucked along for 181 yards while QB Philip Rivers had a quiet yet efficient day going 13 of 26 for 180 yards and 2 TDs to TE Antonio Gates and WR Vincent Jackson. The defending champions are traveling next to the east coast where they will face the Philadelphia Eagles.

Make that 18 in a row

Broncos GM Kyle Butler must be wondering if there is a curse on his team.
His talented squad lost tonight in San Diego for 18th consecutive time versus the pesky Chargers by a score of 45-16.

Philip Rivers led the charge for the home team going 16 of 26 for 340 yards and 4 TDs. Offseason acquisition, Andre Johnson caught 3 of the majors while fan favorite Legedu Naanee converted the other on a spectacular 77 yard reception. Michael Turner rushed for 103 yrds on 30 carries and recorded his 5th touchdown of the season.

On defense, USL career sack leader Luis Castillo racked up another 4 to his personal stats against an overwhelmed Cutler.

And again

Special teams also contributed when Chris Barclay returned a 100 yards kickoff on the last play of the 3rd quarter.
WR Chris Chambers was the lone bright spot for Denver with 11 receptions and 179 yards which is quite impressive considering he was matched up versus Antonio Cromartie.

Merriman recorded his 7th sack of the season

At mid-season, the Chargers are now sitting atop the AFC West with a 7-1 record a 3 game cushion over Denver. Next week, they will be hosting a very impressive Redskins unit that is well in command in the NFC East.

Chargers extend win streak versus the Broncos

Turnovers were the difference in Mile High in a 34-24 Chargers victory. Indeed, the Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler tossed 5 interceptions while HB Travis Henry added a fumble. With the win, the Chargers extended their record to 17-0 versus the Broncos since the USL was created.

QB Philip Rivers threw TD passes to Andre Johnson & Legedu Naanee for the winners. Michael Turner and Carey Davis added 2 majors on the ground.

Antonio Cromartie and Sean Taylor each had a pair of picks while Quentin Jammer got his 5th pick in as many games.

"Our defense played tough today to force the turnovers and take the pressure off the offense" said coach Turner after the game.
"We were hungry today" said the star of the game CB Cromartie. "We had to sit thru the entire bye week watching films of our loss to the Ravens and we wanted to add one in the W column right away".

"We've add a lot of success against the Broncos in the past but we had no intention of taking them lightly. They are clearly the biggest threat in our division" retorted GM Jean Roy.

The Chargers are now 3-0 versus their division opponents and will be facing the Dallas Cowboys at home next week.
